Best Protein Powders

Protein is an important part of every cell in your body. When your body needs to build and repair tissues, as well as create hormones, enzymes, and other body chemicals, it requires protein in order to do so. It's also an important component of bones, muscles, cartilage, skin, and even blood.

Along with fat and carbs, protein is one of three macronutrients that our bodies require to function properly. However, in today's day and age of processed foods and an overabundance of carbs, sometimes we don't get enough protein. When that happens, we can become irritable, tired, and lethargic. We also lose muscle mass, and our immune system can be weakened.

It's especially important when you start to exercise more, because your body needs an optimal amount of protein in order to build and repair muscles. It's also a good idea to get a high quality protein in your diet, one that includes all of the essential amino acids to make it easier for your body to utilize.

So how can we be sure to get enough high quality protein? One way is to add a high-quality protein powder, and there are three that I recommend.

  1. Tera's Organic Whey: Unless you're sensitive to casein, the protein found in milk, whey protein is an excellent source of essential amino acids that will help you maintain your weight, build muscle, and help your muscles recover from activity. Tera's whey protein is my choice for the best whey protein because it is cold-processed whole food whey made from organically fed cows' milk, with no growth hormones or antibiotics. It also comes in real-food flavors like blueberry and coffee, rather than artificial flavors.
  2. Health Force Nutritional's Warrior Food Extreme: If you're vegan, this is the protein powder for you! It's a protein powder made with the most stringent processing methods including non-toxic cleaning agents, processing additives, air quality, and verification of purity. Made with sprouted brown rice and hemp seed in a 50/50 mixture, you're getting some of the best plant proteins available. And since they use natural vanilla flavor and stevia, it's delicious to drink all by itself.
  3. Nutiva's Hemp Protein: This protein powder may not be for everyone, because hemp has a distinctive taste to it. Drinking it by itself is definitely an acquired taste. However, when it's mixed with the right ingredients, like fruit, raw cacao, and/or almond butter, it can taste totally different and be appetizing. Hemp is a great protein, namely for its high omega-3 fatty acid content.

The best part about these is, they are very versatile. While you can drink them straight with water, almond milk, or coconut milk, you can also use them to make all sorts of delicious protein smoothies. Try sprinkling some over your oatmeal for an added protein kick to your breakfast, or add a little to some of your baking recipes.
